And now here's Paul Yoon reading Hostel by Fiona McFarlane.
That was Paul Youn, Reading Hostel, by Fiona McFarlane.
The story appeared in The New Yorker in March of 2024 and was included in McFarlane's collection, Highway 13, which was published later that year.
So, Paul, as you said before, the story opens in a very interesting way by framing itself as a story.
It's a story that this narrator has never told her husband.
But in fact, she isn't even telling the story at that point.
She's imagining telling it.
Yeah, she's imagining it on this imaginary night in bed with her husband.
And we become, even in that first paragraph, we're sort of two or three layers removed from the story itself.
Why do you think that framing was useful to Fiona McFarlane in telling this story?
And we started in the bedroom.
Yes, and strangely, because what follows is this story that she's imagining telling her husband.
We never get the actual telling of it, and we never get at all, really, in the story, the presence of that husband.
And even in that scene, he's not described.
She says that, you know, the relevant part of him is his penis.
We know nothing else about it.
Presumably he has a head and some hands and so on, but they're not relevant.
So it's a very, it is kind of a weirdly disembodied, fragmented image of a man in bed.
A hundred percent.
