In the early summer dark, in pagan light of the fire, the boy settles down and asks if we know Candy by Paolo Nutini.

The past is a foreign country.
My Joel.
The most considerate person I know in the 11 years we've been together.
Since I was as young as our companions this evening.

Finally, they go to leave.
They do so with some ceremony, thanking us for our hospitality.
