Here we go.
Well, essentially what is part of the problem is that Iran and the United States
They agreed in June a so-called Memorandum of Understanding, which was a kind of a 60-day ceasefire with a framework for talks that would eventually, they hoped, lead to some kind of peace agreement.
And there were a number of things that were set out in that, and one was that
Iran agreed to allow shipping to move through the Strait of Hormuz.
The United States said it would lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports.
And so that would allow Iran to move its ships in and out.
And also that the U.S.
lifted its sanctions on Iran exporting its oil.
And so that meant that there was some money coming into Iran.
So there were some incentives to keep it going.
But what the Iranians decided was that there was also an element in this memorandum of understanding which said that the Iranians were responsible for ensuring the navigation of ships through the strait.
The Iranians thought that meant, or they said they thought that meant, that they had control over who comes in and out of the Strait of Hormuz.
And so what was happening was that they were asking ships to go down by the Iranian coastline and to register with them, tell them they were coming.
They weren't actually charging them money, but they had this sort of system which they'd had in place before where they were charging them for about...
a million or two million dollars per tanker.
And so basically they wanted them all to go down that way.
But meanwhile the Americans were encouraging ships to go down another route which was along the coast of Oman, which is on the other side of the Strait of Hormuz.
And those ships, as they started to go through, Iran started firing at them and started hitting them with missiles.
And so when Iran hit one or two of these ships, the Americans said, you're in breach of the ceasefire.
