We know that it works.
Aberdeen's a little bit smaller than Dublin so it would be on a bigger scale here.
But yeah, so what I've been doing is looking at what worked in Aberdeen and how it could be applied in the Dublin and Wicklow region.
Aberdeen City had like an island population of grey squirrels.
So somebody introduced a number of them into like a petting zoo kind of scenario in the 1970s.
And then they escaped.
Yeah, they escaped on their first night.
I think it was like it was a similar number to the founding population in Ireland, actually.
It was under 20.
in Aberdeen in 1971 or 72.
They escaped on their first night and they did what they do.
They became established with invasive species.
You know, it takes a little while for them to build up a bit of momentum.
And then, you know, over several decades, they spread and replaced red squirrels, as you would expect them to do.
Nothing was done about it until around 2009 or 2010.
And at that point, it was like, look, they're spreading.
They're starting to go into the Scottish, you know, spreading out towards the Highlands.
This is the only really healthy population of red squirrels left in the UK now are at risk.
So they started a grey squirrel control programme with Aberdeen City Council as one of the main project partners, which was really instrumental, actually, in the project's success, because that meant that the team had access to publicly owned and managed land to control grey squirrels.
So after about five or 10 years and the project going really quite well, it was decided like, OK, let's actually, instead of just trying to contain them, I think we could go for eradication.
