Okay, so the feasibility study is looking at what would be possible in terms of grey squirrel control with the aim of red squirrels eventually returning to the greater Dublin and Wicklow region.
So in order for red squirrels to be able to return, grey squirrels would need to be absent across the landscape.
The two species don't coexist together and they certainly wouldn't in an urban environment.
So Dun Laoghaire, Rathdown County Council, Dublin City Council, Fingal, South Dublin and Wicklow County Council, as well as the National Parks and Wildlife Service, have come together and are looking at what they would need to do in order to be able to achieve red squirrels returning to the Dublin Wicklow region.
Yeah, it's a bit of both.
So I spent between 2020 and the end of 2024, I worked for the Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels project in the northeast of Scotland and led the urban eradication of grey squirrels from Aberdeen City.
So we know that it can be done.
I think for a long time there's been an assumption that grey squirrels
do really well in cities and that there's not really any way of getting rid of them there because you're obviously much more limited in terms of what you can do in terms of grey squirrel control.
But actually the urban eradication from Aberdeen City has been really successful.
They haven't declared eradication yet because that takes some time but it is anticipated that they will be declaring eradication quite soon.
