Everyone was excited to see red squirrels coming back.

And there isn't any habitat in Aberdeen City that was occupied by grey squirrels that doesn't now have red squirrels in it.

They're less numerous than grey squirrels.

So they're not as obvious when they're there.

So if you're walking with your dog, you're not going to see a red squirrel in a city park.

And you probably need to see them early in the morning when there are less people there.

They're not as numerous.

They're not as bold.

So they're not going to be as visible.

But they do occupy the same habitat.

They're there.

Oh, yeah.

So, you know, the methods that were used in Aberdeen was... So anywhere that there had ever been traps, because the grey squirrel numbers were becoming so low, these were replaced with squirrel feeders that red squirrels, grey squirrels and pine martins will all readily use.

And, you know, there's maybe 500 feeders across Aberdeen City or probably more now.

And...

Around 70% of those feeders like regularly get red squirrel hairs on them.

And like, for example, last year there was one grey squirrel hair on any feeders and there was, I don't know, about four or five thousand red squirrel.

So with hair samples, you don't need to.

Like using camera traps in an urban environment as well is different than using it in the countryside because there's rules around GDPR and filming people and stuff like that.

But yeah, the team do use live cameras as well.
