And grey squirrels can just eat them.

Red squirrels have to wait until they're much riper.

But when grey squirrels are present, they've already been eaten.

So by the time these big seeds that they favour and help them to do really well, by the time they're available to red squirrels, they will already have been eaten by grey squirrels.

Well, it's not up to us to tolerate it.

I mean, this is nature and we don't get to decide whether the two of them can live together or not.

Ecologically, scientifically, no, they can't.

So the grey squirrel does spend more time on the ground.

Red squirrels spend time higher in the branches.

But they use the same resources and they eat the same food.

And when grey squirrels are present, red squirrels are outcompeted.

And that's not for me to decide.

It's not a decision that us as humans can make.

That's just a matter of fact.

So grey squirrels will do well in the Caledonian pine forests of Scotland and in any pine forest as well.

It takes them longer.
