What's the cliche about being a good conversationalist?

It's something like to be interesting, be interested.

I love that idea.

You know what?

And that clicks into something I was going to say, which is that I don't think that journalists have it good in every single respect.

But one really nice thing about being a reporter, about being a real journalist, is that your entire life is asking questions of strangers because you are interested in their lives and work.

And in that way, being a journalist is sensational training for dating.

Because what a first date is, is a kind of reporting project.

If you see it just as a like sex project, like this is just about getting this woman into bed with me, I think you're far less likely to succeed than if you think of it as a project by which you're trying to understand what makes them interesting and what is interesting to them.

This is just what reporters do.

You call up someone on the phone.

You've never met them before.

You ask them questions about their work.

You say, I'm sorry, I don't understand that.

You say, is this summary of what you just said an accurate reflection of what you're trying to tell me?

You say, tell me more about that.

That's so interesting.

I didn't even think about my project going in that direction.
