But today I wanted to chat to you specifically about road traffic accidents.
Just bring us back to kind of through that anatomy of it.
Who gets the first call?
What's kind of the first piece of action that brings you and your colleagues out?
And sometimes you mightn't have a lot of information at the very outset of that.
People mightn't realise, I certainly didn't realise the extent to which, as well as the actual paramedics and the first responders, there are thousands of people who are community responders who you can activate to maybe even get there first or to go and check out a scene for you.
And there are thousands of people who do this.
These are just ordinary members of the public?
As you said earlier, the image we have is of, you know, high speed ambulances racing to a scene.
But does the dynamic change once you get there in terms of having to assess what you're facing?
Can the scene of an accident tell you a lot about what comes next?
Yeah.
And look, when you think of it, look, I mean, you've been in the job now 21 years.
So do you remember a time when things weren't even as safe as they are now?
And obviously there are concerns about the number of road deaths.
But what was it like sort of pre-airbags?
Was that a challenging time?
Like a crack in the screen.
And I know we look at it, it's sort of automatic for most of us, but you know, the importance of seatbelts.
And does the size of the cars, Gerard, does that kind of matter now?
