It's actually really interesting talking about Denver defense.
off the heels of talking about Kansas City because you can't imagine two offenses set up differently in terms of supports for their quarterbacks right now than you would see between the Broncos and Chiefs.
But they've had an offensive line that stayed unusually healthy for the last two years.
You very rarely get your five starters through a season in back-to-back years the way that Denver has been.
They really have not had to suffer
much attrition from a health perspective up front, which has helped them stay stable in terms of a run game in spite of the fact that they don't have dynamic playmakers in the backfield playing beside Bo Nix.
They've always been able to kind of dial up these screens, these quick passes, these bootlegs that just get the ball out of Nix's hands quickly and allow people to go try to create some yards underneath.
And they did the perfect thing for that style of offense this offseason by adding a player like Jalen Waddell, right?
Like this is a receiver that can turn a hitch, you know, that should be a six yard gain into a 46 yard gain, right?
If not a touchdown outright.
If you can add that type of dynamic ability and if you believe that
that alleviates some pressure on a guy like Cortland Sutton, who's probably best as like a 1A, 1B, or maybe number two option, sharing the field with another guy that kind of fits that role.
That might open up enough of the offense where, again, it might not be pretty every week because they just, Sean Payton's offenses, even with maybe Davis Webb calling it, which I am curious to see how that turns out, they always kind of have these weeks where they sputter or they're just kind of sitting on the ball on first and second downs.
and just barely getting it across the chains on the thirds.
But I think that in those high leverage moments, having someone like Waddell with the institutional buildup that they already have in terms of supports around Bo Nix, I would not be shocked at all if this is a top 10 offense.
It probably wouldn't be all that surprised if it's a top five offense.
I mean, and I can't tell you that it's not going to be a disaster, right?
But then Payton will just grab that play sheet if it is, so maybe it's not that big of a deal.
I don't know.
I was joking with our colleagues Austin Gale and Steven Ruiz a couple of weeks ago that if I were Davis Webb, I wouldn't want to be calling offense at practice from the press box if I could, just to put as much distance as possible between me and Sean Payton.
