The magic murder case began when the great Mento, theatrical magician, was found in his locked dressing room, a knife planted firmly in his back.
Nobody could have gotten into or out of the dressing room, yet Mento couldn't possibly have been a suicide.
Vance and I have questioned Betty Anderson, Mento's assistant, and have found that Mento had quarreled with Pop Baker, a craftsman catering to magicians.
Vance has gone to see him while I have decided to continue questioning Miss Anderson.
My experience as district attorney has taught me, Miss Anderson, that murderers rarely do look like murderers.
That's what complicates my job and Sergeant Heath's and Philo Vance's.
