I had no idea what the trade show business was.
Honestly, no idea about the gift industry, really.
I mean,
So I went and walked a show.
I found it so exhilarating, so exciting.
I'd never been to one.
It was like this access to creativity on a very different level.
Were they still smoking in the shows?
Oh, yeah.
Smoking and all the women were wearing four-inch heels and it was a whole other ballgame.
It was back in the 90s.
But the energy was crazy.
And then also the sort of cottage industry element of it, all the small companies next to really big established brands was just...
Really incredible to see kind of that trajectory of the ecosystem.
Anyway, I thought it was really fascinating.
So I showed up a week later to write for the magazine and they shut the magazine down the day before I arrived.
Well, I showed up and there was just a note on my desk that said, we're not producing Gift Reporter anymore, but we want you to help the SVP of business development.
So anyway, that was how I got started.
And the first 10 years were really around launching new shows because that was the time when shows were the only way for buyers and sellers to connect.
