The seconds ticked by and I realized that I was holding my breath.
The 911 dispatcher's muted voice hummed from my pocket, and I twisted to grab my phone.

I put my hand to my shoulder, winced as my fingers brushed the wound, and felt my head, relieved to discover a shallow furrow, despite the blood pouring from the gash.
A strange calm settled over me as I kicked into survival mode, my mind unwilling to register that I had been shot, that it had been my dad pulling the trigger.
As the flap fell, I sprang forward, kicked out as hard as I could, catching him in the chin, knocking him backward, the gun flying from his hand.
