Where was Mom?
I knew that I had to stay calm, that I couldn't afford to tip my hand and reveal that I knew something was wrong.
I slipped my phone back into my pocket, turned and ran the sleeve of my jacket over my eyes to wipe away the tears, and thanked God that I hadn't worn any makeup today, as bleeding mascara would have surely given me away.
It was then I noticed him.
A figure stood on the hill above me, just inside the tree line, its lanky frame nearly silhouetted against the murky sky.
Long black hair hung in clumped tendrils to its waist, blowing in the chilled breeze and masking its face except for one red eye.
Although it was difficult to be certain, he seemed to be naked, his bone-white skin nearly glowing against the dark backdrop of tree trunks.
Impossibly thin.
Skeletal, really.
Its sinewy musculature reminding me of photos I'd seen of mummified remains.
The Camp Skedetamooch killer from my childhood.
Almost exactly how I'd imagined him.
I turned back and the figure was gone, and I wondered if he'd ever been there at all, or if the stresses of the day had me seeing things.
My mind drifted to the stories about missing campers as I rushed away from the scene and back to our campsite.
Did you get lost?
Dad asked as I approached.
I was startled to hear the words coming out of my mouth.
I expected shock.
For him to stammer as he tried to come up with an excuse that didn't implicate him in something terrible.
Instead, he sighed, reached into his pocket, and withdrew it, handing it to me.
