For a long time, people were interested in this idea of how you can judge somebody being dominant or aggressive just from their facial appearance.

And the way they decided on how to measure it was looking at the ratio of how wide somebody's face is to how tall it is.

And it turned out that that ratio, particularly if you have a very high ratio, so your face is very wide compared to how tall it is, correlated with all sorts of things like, for example, in hockey games.

had players with a high facial with high ratio more aggressive.

CEOs of companies that earn more money had agreed to facial with the high ratio.

And there's some evidence to suggest that it's associated with testosterone.

Males with more testosterone have this particular facial feature.

And importantly for our study,

There's an assumption that it's greater in males than it is in females.

So men have this bigger ratio when it faces compared to females.

They thought it mattered because of essentially the influence of hormones.

Sex hormones influence bone growth.

So testosterone is a fantastic hormone for making bones grow.

And estrogen, comparatively, is a bone growth inhibitor.

And so male and female faces differ in kind of fairly...

regular ways, right?

So males have a much stronger jawline and they have a heavier kind of brow ridge.

As to how they arrived at this idea of facial width to high ratio, it all came from skulls, actually.
