People were analysing

just skulls, obviously, of dead people.

And they stumbled, really, across this association just by chance, really.

They were measuring all sorts of things, looking at differences between men and women.

And they found that facial width to height ratio seemed greater in men.

And the story kind of went from there.

It was a really good question.

So, in fact, it was done by anthropologists, I think, to start with.

And then soon after, the field of evolutionary psychology, which uses Darwin's ideas of natural and sexual selection to explain human behavior, kind of ran with it.

And so they, yeah, lots of papers came out using a specific statistical framework, which I think we'll touch on in a few more minutes, and found that this effect seemed, this facial width to height ratio was significantly, I use that in the statistical sense, greater in men, and also seems statistically associated with things like aggressive behavior and testosterone growth.

Science is full of things like this.

Science is surprisingly inconsistent.

In fact, it's more inconsistent than it is consistent.

So to touch on this very briefly, the idea is that in statistics, we have this number called a p-value.

And you've probably seen this in news reports, like something is statistically significantly associated with something else.

What that means is there's some evidence of a relationship between two variables.

One of the big problems, though, is that you can only publish a paper if you end up with statistically significant findings.

And so the literature, the scientific literature, is full of

these papers that sometimes don't have very reliable results.

So you can be led astray by this p-value, as it's called, the p-value.
