While they're in foster care, they're just trying to grow up and become children, right?

They're just growing up during childhood while this legal case is going on.

After about a year, these kids had gone from being very developmentally delayed, very underweight,

to these adorable kids who are like singing in clinic, dancing on the exam table, connected with their caseworkers and their family and the clinic.

And probably we were more connected to them than they felt towards us, but it was just like always fun to see them and to see their success.

And we heard that the decision was made for them to reunify.

We'd never met the family.

Our job, again, is we don't weigh in on, as pediatrics, I mean, in primary care especially, we have no opinion around who should raise children.

We know that if you choose to take this sacred task on, here's what they need from you.

And we asked if we could work with the family before reunification because the children that were taken out of their home were different than the ones a year later.

And so the courts agreed for us to do visits with the family before the children were unified.

And over a course of several weeks, we watched this couple really change from being kind of angry about being there, right?

These are their kids.

Like, why are we trying to tell them what they need to do?

To prompting each other to ask questions, writing things down, being really cute with their engagement with their kiddos, um,

very actively participating and planning for how to be the best parents they could for the children they'd always loved, but had hardships that kept them from being the parents they were meant to be.

And towards the end, we were able to really say, based on the needs of these children at this stage in their lives, the parents were able to describe

that they can meet their needs.

Now, again, we don't decide what happens.

The courts decide what will happen.
