We're on our phones.
We have Instagram.
We buy something quickly.
We have something delivered right away.
We have a lot more expectation of ease and convenience.
than our parents did.
And so what does that mean?
As a general rule, our kids can't learn to tolerate feelings we don't tolerate in them.
Oh my God.
So if my kid is frustrated, because of course they are, they're not allowed to have a sleepover.
If I can't tolerate my kid's frustration, probably because I just kind of want to get back to my Instagram scroll and move on with my convenient life.
You know what I'm going to do as a parent?
I am going to stop them from having a tantrum.
Either I'll give in or I'll change my rule.
And I say to myself, I'm doing this because I want my kid to be happy.
That's not why.
We don't tolerate our kids' upset feelings because we can't tolerate our own upset feelings.
You think we've lost the ability to be uncomfortable, full stop?
I don't know, lost.
I'm more hopeful than that.
