They have no chance.
They just dig alternative tunnels and get to the females in this sneaky way.
We call them sneakers.
And those guys usually have bigger testes.
That's right.
It looks like there's often more than one way to achieve the fertilizations.
And the main one, at least the one that stands out to us the most as human observers, is the big male that is calling or fighting.
But usually when you look into the system carefully enough and you start understanding the system better, you realize some males are doing something else.
And then there's a whole suite of traits that work together well, like being small but producing a lot of sperm.
