So we have a pure core purpose.
We have a reason for the thing that we're doing.
And we can set it up there.
And that's what we're trying to do.
And by the way, your pure core purpose is always about people.
It's never about a target.
It's never about a four-hour target or time to weigh or anything like that.
It's about people.
But then...
Beyond that, we have to be able to describe what constrains our pure core purpose and why we can't do something, which is what leads it into why I have to say no about some stuff.
And if you get talking to people about this, it's about giving them language to be able to explain to people who may make unrealistic expectations of them.
The things that constrain our pure core purpose tend to be staffing,
finance, and environment.
And if those things aren't right, we can't achieve stuff.
And I think it's important to be able to describe why we're saying, no, I can't do that because maybe she'd just be able to say, no, I'm not doing it.
But I find it's a more powerful discussion if I say because, because then I'm actually making an ask for something that would make it possible to do that thing.
Because if it's that important to the people who are asking you, you should be resourced to be able to do it.
I know we've raised this up with closer work, but I'll tell you, the single most useful thing for me, and that's really transformed my approach to people at work who are struggling, is to recognise that we tend to call them difficult.
And the moment we start calling somebody a difficult nurse, a difficult doctor, we're making a judgement about it.
And it's about stepping back from that and having a reframe.
