And I know that probably most people in the room know this, but I'm going to say it because it's that important.
For me, when I reframe from a difficult doctor to a doctor in difficulty, from a difficult patient to a patient in difficulty, from a difficult family to a family who are in difficulty, it changes me.
It changes who I am in that next conversation.
It takes me from being somebody who's made a judgment about some other human being into somebody who becomes curious about what is going on for them, curious to understand what's going on in their world.
When I move from judgment to curiosity, I unlock a relationship.
I stop it being a fight.
I start it being something that feels respectful and understanding.
I could talk about having a whole difficult conversations with people and what the evidence says.
I will tell you one thing about that.
Okay, so this is a hill I will die on, and it's going to be really difficult for some people in the room to hear.
I think that systems where you have friction within the system team, you have a victim and a perpetrator, systems that take the victim to the perpetrator as a standard practice are a disaster.
I think there's a ton of evidence on this.
I think we all want to be able to go and tell somebody when they've not treated us very well.
We nearly universally do it abysmally, and there's really good psychological reasons why we do it abysmally.
It's a skill we would love to have.
We're crap at it.
There are much better ways of letting somebody know that their behavior has landed badly, and it is not getting the victim to hold a conversation.
I would ask them how they are.
And after they've answered, I would say, no, really, how are you?
I'm going to hold the space.
