And if we, that's sort of emotionally, and we don't get the social benefits in the same way online.
So if you've got the option of doing a real life choir or a virtual choir, you're getting that extra social dimension much more strongly when it's real life.
And we know that's because it's not just about the singing, right, or the craft.
It's about those side conversations that you have as well.
It's about those physical body language interactions too.
So there really is something about the embodied experience that is really good and important.
But I think the message is that if you've not got the option of in-person or if you're not feeling like you're up to in-person, if you're feeling safer to start off engaging in a virtual environment, then this still does bring benefits.
So it depends what kind of outcome you're interested in.
If we're looking at mental health, so anxiety, depression, for example, those symptoms, we actually see remarkably similar results from the trials, whether you are actively taking part, doing something, or whether you're more receptively looking at things in a gallery or going to a theatre or going to a concert.
It is different mechanisms.
So for the actively participating, then you're really focusing on that building of mastery and self-esteem and identity.
And you've got that tactile sensory experience.
Whereas for the more receptive things, it might be more about emotion processing or new narratives or that exposure to kind of new fictional characters and experiences that we spoke about.
But then there are other things where it can matter a bit more.
So if we're thinking about, for example, stress reduction and sleep, then we know that that regular beat that you get from listening to music, for example, that synchronization with that beat is something that is very specific to music.
But I think the overall, the sort of messages, try and have a variety of different experiences.
I mean, I'm not suggesting you've got to have 10 hobbies every day that you're doing because everyone, everyone is busy.
But I think figure out, is there a time in the day when you can always sit down and listen to 20 minutes of music?
Like maybe that's before you go to bed, you're always going to have that 20 minutes, not multitasking.
But just really having that relaxation response to finally process your stress and calm down.
