For me, that 20 minutes is on my commute to and from work.
Like that listening to music then is really, really key for keeping my stress levels at the level I want them to be after that kind of stimulation of work.
But then also thinking, can you have that class that you do?
each week?
Or can you have these ways of hacking the arts onto your existing life?
Like if you're meeting up with friends, could you meet up and go to an exhibition or a gig together?
Or can you do a craft together?
So you're having that creative experience layered on top of things you've already got in your routine.
Well, each thing will bring different ingredients, and it could be that some of your arts experiences are then more social, some are more relaxing, some are more pushing your safety boundaries, some are more physical, like dance.
Dance is fabulous.
It also builds your bone density and your posture and your balance and your strength.
So having this whole mix is really key.
And in fact, we found in a lot of the studies...
the best outcomes aren't just about frequency of engagement, but diversity of what you engage with, which is exactly what we see for exercise too.
And it also avoids something called the hedonic treadmill.
So the hedonic treadmill is the idea that if you just do one thing, you can actually start to adapt to it and it doesn't bring you quite the same benefits because you're expecting it and it starts to become a bit samey.
Whereas if you've got more variety, then actually it keeps things fresher.
It keeps the novelty, which keeps you more motivated to engage
and enhances the wellbeing benefits you get from it.
Exactly the same.
