And I'll explain what that means.
So a lot of research, a lot of sleep research will say, okay, we're going to give you no sleep for one night.
And then we're going to test your cognitive performance the next day.
And that like kind of describes the field in general.
And that's good because you're really stressing the system to see if there's really an effect there.
However, ecologically relevant means most of us, when we miss sleep, it's not like we miss an entire night.
We just don't get as much.
So my research was looking more at the sensitivity around sleep loss with cognitive performance.
So let's say you just miss a couple hours of sleep.
How does that show up in altered brain performance?
And then specifically, how did that lead to different eating behavior?
Because we've known that connection to be real.
So there was epidemiological work that shows if you don't get quite enough sleep, then you have alterations in insulin sensitivity.
You might have altered eating behavior.
And a lot of times when you are experiencing sleep loss, you will not automatically see how your decision-making is altered.
So it changes you in ways that are somewhat covert to you.
They're hidden.
Now, that doesn't mean that you can't see them.
You can move them from like more of a non-conscious or subconscious state into your conscious.
Like, oh yeah, I'm not feeling great today.
