And I think what's key is that you have a front row seat to a child's development during some critical period.
However, I think we often overemphasize early infancy, and there's this idea that if we miss the first hour after birth or the first...
three days after birth or the first month that we've somehow missed our chance to bond.
And that's not really true, right?
We know that adoptive parents and step-parents can have profound connections with their kids.
I grew up with a stepdad who I met when I was nine, and he ended up being a really formative influence in my life.
And so I think it depends on when the dad comes into the picture and what kind of work and practice he's willing to put in to make that connection.
But I would say as long as there's any stretch of a child's youth that a dad is witnessing and participating in, he can play a role as a parent.
Yeah, so we see changes in testosterone around the birth of a new baby.
We don't know as much about how hormones change in adoptive or step-parents because there just isn't a lot of research about this.
Most of the work is on early parenthood, and most of it is focusing on biological parents.
Mm-hmm.
Yes.
No.
So it's linked, as are the brain changes, to dad's participation in care.
Okay.
So we see this not just in humans.
We see this in animal models as well.
You are probably familiar with the challenge hypothesis, the idea that we want high levels of testosterone under certain circumstances.
It's adaptive for testosterone to drop in other circumstances.
