Again, because we don't have these close intergenerational ties that maybe were normative a couple of generations ago.

So I think having social support, continuous social support, is one of the best ways to have a positive birth experience.

However, I think when dads are unprepared, when they're terrified, and when they haven't figured out how to communicate effectively with moms, they can have a deleterious impact on the birth process.

So that's male pregnancy, and it's a phenomenon by which males start to— This is a real thing.

Well, it's a controversial thing.

I talk about it a little bit in the book.

I think it's more anecdotal than evidence-based.

So the data on it, there have been a couple studies that have been done, but I don't fully trust the results.

We actually looked at it in my sample of dads.

We didn't find any associations between hormones.

and dad's self-reported pregnancy symptoms.

But it's basically like a sympathetic pregnancy.

And you see it in different cross-cultural models.

Men feeling like they're experiencing nausea, pregnancy patterns of weight gain, sympathetic labor pains.

And this study that was done in a UK hospital found that expectant dads reported a bunch of pregnancy-like symptoms during their partner's pregnancy.

Well, a lot of these pains are stress related, right?

So if you think about things like gastrointestinal distress and, you know, difficulty sleeping, those are things that come when you're really stressed.

So, yeah, exactly.

Needless to say, a lot of expectant moms are annoyed by this research because, you know, only one of you is actually puking because of the baby.

The other person might just be freaking out.
