And this is relatively new information really for everyone.
And what this book really represents is a convergence of so many of the things that I've been exploring for the past 35 years.
The idea that a refined carbohydrate diet, now we call it ultra processed foods, lack of exercise, not getting restorative sleep, lack of socialization,
All of these things are inroads to making a good brain go bad, but we never really understood how they work, right?
We've known that type 2 diabetics have as much as a threefold increased risk for developing Alzheimer's, that they have an 85% increased risk of developing Parkinson's above people who do not have type 2 diabetes, but we never really got the why.
We just said, well, that's it.
Maybe we shouldn't be diabetic.
Okay.
But what's been so exciting for me in this exploration of the immune system of the brain
is this is where everything converges.
This is where inflammation, changes in the gut microbiome, a lack of restorative sleep, the types of diets we consume, our exercise or not, all of these things converge on determining whether our brain's immune system, cells called the microglial cells, I wanna just memorialize that because we're gonna be talking about that quite a bit, the cells of the brain that we're talking about, the immune cells are called microglial cells,
but they are very sensitive to everything I just mentioned.
And when they are either stimulated in the right way or the wrong way, they are either brain defenders, keeping the neurons happy, allowing us to form new synapses, shoring up the blood-brain barrier, or they shift to becoming what I call in the book the evil twin, the M1 microglial cell.
That M1 microglial cell destroys synapses, creates an environment that's very destructive
for the neurons and really leads to leakiness of the blood-brain barrier.
So what we're gonna unpack today will be everything you talk about all the time, your Fab Four foods, everything you talk about, but through the lens of how it's affecting
these immune cells in the brain called microglia and really ultimately determining whether we are paving the way for our brain to be along for the ride or setting ourselves up for a brain that is not going to be really fully functional as we age.
The M2 version is what we want.
We want that M2.
