The M2 are our supportive, nurturing, loving microglial brain immune cells.
To be fair, I think that we've all fallen into the idea of characterizing the immune system as being something that really doesn't do a whole heck of a lot until we are challenged by an infection, a virus, a bacterium, whatever it may be.
Then the firemen come out of the firehouse and deal with our problems.
That's sort of the classical way that we've all been trained to understand the immune system.
But the reality is that it's doing a heck of a lot of maintenance and nurturing, at least in the brain.
That these M2 supportive microglial cells are allowing energetics to happen, the mitochondria to work efficiently.
They're allowing repair to happen, the maintenance of the myelin.
the maintenance of the blood-brain barrier, and allowing synapses not only to form, which we need to make connections between brain cells, it's how we learn things, but also to nurture those synapses so that they don't degrade with time.
Now, when we challenge these supportive loving microglial cells, I always say loving.
They're feminine to me and they shift to a more masculine warlike Mars phenotype when they're M1.
they just want to go around and destroy things so when that happens then we destabilize our synapses uh destroy the neurons destroy break down the blood-brain barrier we create much more inflammation in the brain which in and of itself is destructive so
I think what we ought to begin to understand are the influences that shift our microglia away from being supportive.
And we'll get to that in a minute, but what comes to mind
Well, I guess that's really where all my thoughts would, where else are they going to go?
You know, what comes to mind is the fact that these microglial cells, when they shift being the destructive M1, we see that across all the spectrum of neurodegenerative and even neurodevelopmental and even psychiatric mood issues.

And how do I know that?
Well, we can actually image these cells in a living human being doing a special kind of scan, we talk about it in the book, called TSPO imaging.
And this TSPO imaging lights up, as you would expect, in Alzheimer's, in Parkinson's.
In frontotemporal dementia, multiple sclerosis, progressive supernuclear palsy, long COVID, autism spectrum disorder, and even major depressive disorder.
