The researchers developed these ways using what are called monoclonal antibodies to bind the beta amyloid in the brain and allow the immune system to get rid of it.
And were they successful in developing these drugs?
Very much so.
These drugs dramatically lower beta amyloid in the brain.
The problem is that there's no real change in the rate of cognitive decline in the Alzheimer's patients.
So yeah, I mean, you're doing a biological intervention, you're lowering the beta amyloid, but patients are still declining rapidly and dying from Alzheimer's disease.
In fact, the Cochrane analysis that you referred to was an analysis of 20,342 individuals who
17 studies, average follow in these studies was 18 months.
And the Cochrane analysis, the gold standard that we refer to when we're trying to figure things out, we look for a Cochrane analysis, said that the drugs basically don't work.
Their word was, their effectiveness was, in their words, trivial.
And we always look at what's called the risk benefit ratio.
What is the risk of using a drug?
What is the benefit?
Well, the benefit is basically zero.
The risk is that 20 to 25% of these people using these drugs are going to get hemorrhages into their brains and or swelling or edema in the brain as well.
And that can't be a good thing.
So that's the risk.
And there are deaths associated with these drugs.
