The president is an elected king.

And as I always tease my American friends, the administrative, I'm going to test you, the administrative officer of the House of Representatives, what's he called?
I don't know.

Americans have the faintest idea what a Surgeon-at-Arms is.
But it's there because they're because the British Parliament, the British Parliament has a Surgeon-at-Arms.

I slightly bridled when you sort of said, oh, you're a historian, but now we're talking about the present.
It seems to me the only way that we can get out of this mess is by realizing that our present has erred terribly, precisely because it's repudiated our past.
And what we have to do is to reconnect.
We've to realize, whereas people like Blair or whatever, although they talk about the hand of history, they clearly regard it just as, you know, fuddy-duddyism, old-fashioned, you know, just to be thrown away.
But in fact, properly, the history of the people is an organic thing.
It's like a fertile soil.
