Blood is a product from our body and it contains a liquid called plasma and it contains lots of cells.
Dr.
And as soon as those cells come out of our body, they have a lifespan.
So keeping those products fresh so that we can give them to patients and they work really well is the biggest challenge, especially with platelets.
Red cells we can keep in the fridge normally.
Platelets, we've also been looking at refrigeration of platelets.
But if we really want to extend their shelf life, we can freeze them, and that's called cryo.
preservation.
The main thing is when you freeze a cell, as it freezes, ice crystals can form and they can break into the cell and tear them apart.
And then when you thaw them, all of those cells burst open and they're no longer able to function and do the job that we want them to do.
So the real challenge is freezing them slowly so that we don't get ice crystals forming.
and adding what we call a cryopreservation agent.
So red cells we add glycerol.
Glycerol is what you put in your car as an antifreeze.
Of course we don't put those into the patients.
The other challenge is removing the cryopreservation agent.
So we wash the red cells very intensively but gently after we thaw them out.
And with the platelets what we do is we add a different compound, it's called DMSO for short.
