It was a very large chamber.
There was red pigment on one side of the wall.
Red is an important burial color to the Maya.
And we could see bone.
We knew it likely was a royal tomb.
We're in a residential plaza area, and there are buildings on all sides.
And the Maya, typically, their houses are like that.
There's a plaza in the center, and then the buildings surround it.
The buildings that are, generally speak, on the north or the west or the south are often just regular residential buildings, or in this case, palaces.
Absolutely.
And then the building to our right, which is to the east, that's the mortuary building, and that's where you would bury your dead.
Yes, look, that's a good place to look for burials, and it's also a good place to look for caches.
Those are other ritual deposits that are placed inside the buildings.
We had done excavations in the center.
We'd done excavations there, off to the side over here.
But there was an area that we also had not covered.
We'd had to stop an excavation short because the fill was not necessarily as stable as it could be.
We were at the end of the field season.
And a number of years later, we came back.
We find essentially that there's an open area near the floor and the side of our excavation that we just had to move a few stones and we were inside.
