An open air tomb.
It's corbel vaulted.
There's no external door.
And we could see pottery vessels on the floor.
It had not been disturbed.
Yeah.
It was a very large chamber.
There was red pigment on one side of the wall.
Red is an important burial color to the Maya.
And we could see bone, one person, so sometimes our chambers have more than one, but just one person inside, multiple ceramic vessels.
And at first we knew it likely was a royal tomb.
There weren't any hieroglyphs to indicate that because it's a little earlier than the time period where we would get writing on the capstones, but we thought, all right, this is probably a royal individual, someone really important.
But as we went further, we began to realize that this was someone really, really important for this point in time.
So the artifacts started to tell us a different story.
There were three sets of jadeite air flares.
If we get one set of jadeite air flares inside a chamber, that's pretty impressive.
So there's three large ones.
A very impressive necklace of carved jadeite beads.
And really, though, until about the last days of the excavation when it turns out that there's a life-size death mask inside there that's made out of jade itemshell.
At that point, we knew that this was a royal family, it was a ruler, and based on the timing, we expected that this was probably the first member of our royal dynasty here at Carcol.
