They don't eat a lot more beans and lentils and nuts and seeds.
They shift toward grains.
Beans and lentils make up less than 10% of even the plant-based, actually of the total protein, but only about 18% of the plant-based protein.
So the rest is all coming from those very poor quality grains.
And so we've modeled that.
And basically, if you're getting...
as you go from a high protein, animal protein, say 100%, you can meet your essential amino acid requirements with less than 40 grams of protein per day, if that's your only target.
But as you go down, less animal protein toward more and more plant-based, assuming that you're always making it from grains, at the point of 50%.
If you get below 50% animal proteins, then the RDA for protein can't possibly meet your essential amino acid needs.
So you have to then eat more and more protein to get to it.
So if you get down to a vegetarian, a vegan-based diet, you're going to probably have to be in the 100.
You're going to probably be approaching 120 to 130 grams of protein to meet your essential amino acid requirements.
And most of the other nutrients, the vitamins and minerals also come with those foods.
And I mean, you can go to fortified foods or you can use supplements, but people need to be aware of those liabilities.
And again, I don't think the intent of the guidelines now are to be as prescriptive as before.
They're basically to say, these are the goals.
And when you get outside of the goals, you need to know what liabilities go with that.
And again, I think a major change is we're reprioritizing how people look at the fat and the saturated fat.
We're saying that you should get your fat.
If saturated fat is important to you, and frankly, I don't think it's important to most people, but putting that aside, if saturated fat is important to you, you should get it from real foods.
