People argue that they can't see a change in lean body mass at the higher, you know, the 1.2 to 1.6, but I can't think of a single health outcome that relates to nitrogen balance either.
So just to stop at that, that's the average at 1.1.
So that means 50% of people are above that and 50% of people are below that.
The question is, when they're below that, where are they actually at?
We know that 20% of women over 60 are actually below the RDA.
I mean, if you go out and cherry pick studies, you can always find something probably to support your bias.
I mean, there was a paper I just read yesterday that was from the ELISE study, E-L-I-S, out of Great Britain.
And they did the exact same sort of study, followed 530 people for a 10-year period.
And they found that... And these were...
I forget the exact age, but 65 plus, and they found that functional mobility, walking speed, strength, numbers of falls, morbidity, and mortality all improved in individuals who were above 1.1.
So they chose to cherry pick something.
Okay, I'll cherry pick one on the other side.
The reality is that
We know that there are a lot of people on very low protein intakes, and we think that from the science that we know about body composition, about healthy lean body mass, that the higher protein, when combined with lower carbohydrate diets, is very beneficial.
I'd like to reiterate a statement Heather just said, but stated in a different way.
There's not a single study out there that has ever shown the RDA of 0.8 is better than values above 1.1.
Not a single study that you can find on any parameter that can show you that.
And that's important.
They'll say, well, the data's not consistent.
It doesn't always show that the higher protein is better, but it never, ever shows that the lower protein is better.
