They have to scrub the blood from the halls.

They have to get the smell out.

And after that, Odysseus decides that it's time for Telemachus to step up to be a man and he has to punish them.

He takes 12 of the enslaved women who were the ones who were deemed to have been traitors with the suitors.

And they are strung up by their neck on nooses across the courtyard and killed.

Telemachus.

Exactly.

There is to me an element here of hazing, of, you know, if you're going to be the king, you've got to be ready to do these kinds of things.

This is Odysseus' vision of kingship.

This is what getting home means.

I think we really tend to forget that.

We tend to think it's a kind of romantic arrival home and, you know, the reunion with Penelope.

Before that happens, there is an absolute bloodbath and there is the hanging of 12 enslaved women.

So there are some people who are spared.

You've got, for instance, Eumaeus and Philoetius who were on the right side.

So they're all fine.

There are some of the suitors who try and beg for mercy and not even them get away.

So it is a really kind of thorough cleansing.

Almost a kind of, how can we return to what it looked like before Odysseus left for the Trojan War?

How can we get them all out of our house?
