The Odyssey is a story you can take on many different levels.
You can take it on the kind of surface level of kind of swashbuckling adventure, the fantastical journey, sort of the piratical nature of what he does.
On that level, it's just pure enjoyment.
But I think on a deeper level, there are themes here that resonate with us as humans, themes about what it means to be someone who acts within society, within their community, whether that is someone who's trying to uphold them and get the men home, as Odysseus does, or someone who ends up ultimately destroying them.
What it is to be within a family, what it is to be within a home.
These are themes that I think resonate with us all.
And Odysseus, what he ultimately is trying to do is he is trying...
to get back into human society, make his way in the world.
And if that's not something that all of us understand, that journey to try and understand who you are, how you make your way in the world, I think The Odyssey resonates with us all.
Absolutely.
Thinking about kind of the right codes of conduct with others and that idea of Xenia, that idea of hospitality, guest friendship, those ties that knit us together as a community of humans.
And
how fragile they are as well, how easily they break apart.
I think it's also a warning, right?
That sort of very troubled ending of the Odyssey is also a sense that we need to take care and we need to think these things through.
And the Odyssey is a beautiful prism to think through those kinds of issues.
