One is that a hero really means someone who is between the time when the gods walked the earth and
And the time when it was just a kind of impoverished time of mortals battling each other out.
So the heroes are demigods.
They're sort of, you know, think of Achilles, who's the son of Thetis, a goddess, or Helen, who was the daughter of Zeus.
We've got these sort of larger than life figures.
And that is what a hero is.
They're from an earlier time period that stretch back to the gods.
But the other thing I mentioned is hero cult.
So they are also people who, when they die, you are going to go and worship to ask them to maybe kind of intercede with you or to kind of give you a little bit of a kind of closer stepping point into the gods.
So I'm not sure that you're ever thinking you're going to be like them.
They are from a time that has gone, but they can help you.
And there are people that you can call on.
Indeed.
So that's the other thing is that heroes, and that's not really kind of implicit in the word, that's what we see from their action.
Heroes are people who are actually deeply destructive to their communities.
Right.
And I feel like this is something that we kind of as modern readers, when we see the word hero, we don't think about.
But if you think about someone like Odysseus, when he gets home at the end of the Odyssey, he ends up killing pretty much everyone who is in his palace, all of the men, certainly.
If you think of someone like Achilles, who starts off the Iliad, he begins the Iliad by deciding to retreat from the war immediately.
in order that his fellow Greeks get killed.
