In fact, Achilles name, there's one kind of version of the etymology of his name that actually means grief to the people.

So a hero is like deeply destructive.

Absolutely.

So if we're thinking about looking at late Bronze Age history and obviously kind of we've got to make the qualification here that we're not seeing kind of any easy continuity between, OK, like, well, the Odyssey is definitely depicting the late Bronze Age.

What we're saying instead is that probably the late Bronze Age is one layer in a historical memory that is kind of making up the Odyssey.

But yes, what we're looking at when we're looking at the Bronze Age or indeed periods of history later is that we are not seeing a kind of unified country that is called Greece, that call themselves Greeks.

Instead, you've got what we call city states where you've got a kind of citadel, a kind of sitting at the heart of a larger kind of element of land.

And the kind of famous ones in the late Bronze Age are and we have this from kind of archaeology, from the evidence of antiquity.

different citadels we've got Mycenae which is a big one on the Peloponnese we've got Pelos on the southwest Peloponnese we've got Tiryns and so we've got these kinds of locations and what's really interesting is that many of those actually match up with the places that are some of the core locations in Homer and Odysseus he is from this place called Ithaca now where are we talking with Ithaca

So Ithaca is so difficult because, you know, I mentioned that we've got these lovely matchups like Mycenae, which is an incredibly wealthy citadel.

It's got lots and lots of gold in the archaeology.

What does Homer say?

He says it's a wealthy citadel, rich in gold.

So it's very easy to make kind of easy connections there.

With somewhere like Ithaca, it reminds us, I think, to be a lot more careful.

And the reason I say that, you might be thinking, well, hang on a minute.

There is an island called Ithaca.

Why is this not a problem?
