The problem that we have with that is that in Homer, Homer actually gives a really detailed description of Odysseus' island of Ithaca.
He says that it lies low down to the sea.
It is a group of four islands, the Ionian Islands.
And that of those group of islands, it's furthest to the west.
And the issue is that modern Itaki is none of those.
So we've got only three islands.
Itaki is very mountainous and it's not the furthest to the west.
So in terms of kind of where we're putting Odysseus, it throws a bit of a spanner in the works.
It's more of an outlying power, I would say, because we get a couple of different sort of signs towards that.
One is, in fact, what Odysseus and also his son Telemachus say about their island.
And they talk about it as being like quite rocky, not very fertile, only good for goats, that kind of thing.
So that's sort of their own testimony.
It's not like somewhere where Mycenae has this epithet, an adjective, which calls it rich in gold.
We're not getting that.
And the other thing is in terms of the number of ships that it sends to Troy.
And we're seeing, you know, Agamemnon, the kind of wealthy overlord of the Greeks.
He is sending a lot of ships.
Odysseus is not kind of matching the same.
So we're not looking at one of the principal powers in Homer's world.
Well, we do.
