Helpfully, we call him the lesser Ajax just to differentiate him.

But he ends up horribly raping Cassandra and he rapes her as she's clinging to the statue of Athena.

And it's a horrible kind of moment, but it's really a step too far for the Greeks.

And Athena, who has always been a patron goddess of the Greeks, is both kind of outraged by this, but also deeply insulted because of kind of what's happened to her, her shrine, her temple.

And so she lays a curse on the Greeks.

And this curse, this huge storm is that they are not going to get home.

Or if they do, there's going to be real trouble.

And this is the beginning of the troubles that Odysseus encounters.

I mean, we could spend an entire episode on this one word.

Let's not.

But it's fascinating.

So let's start with the basics of what it is.

It's an adjective or what we would call an epithet.

Now, these epithets are basically words that are attributed to particular characters, particular words, nouns.

So you get them kind of often put together.

So you get like rosy-fingered dawn is a really famous one, wine-dark sea.

And here we've got polythropos odysseus.

So we've got Odysseus and here is his epithet polythropos.

Now, what does that mean?

What's it telling us about him that he is getting this tag, as it were?
