It's kind of made up of two different parts.
Pollu means much or many.
Tropos means turning or turned.
So he is the man who makes many turns, but he is also the man who is much turned.
And what I love about that is that it suggests he's someone who's cunning.
He can make things happen for himself.
He can make turns.
He can make voyages.
But he's also someone who is the object of the wrath of the gods, someone who is turned about on his way home.
So we start the opening of the Odyssey with this man who already is kind of resisting definition.
He is both someone who makes things happen, but also things happen to him.
It really is.
And it can be sort of quite confusing.
You, a little bit like Odysseus, you're getting sort of tossed and turned about in the narrative.
But that's part of kind of, I think, what makes it such an exciting adventure to go on, because you are sort of joining Odysseus as he tries to wend his way home.
So, yeah, we start the Odyssey, in fact, very close to the end of his travels.
where he is being kept on the island of Calypso.
At least that's what he says, that he's being kept prisoner, an island called Ogidja.
And he's trapped there for seven years.
And Athena storms onto Mount Olympus and says to Zeus, it's time that we let Odysseus go.
