And so they go in and they help themselves to the cheese.
Now, we were talking about Xenia earlier.
We were talking about good hospitality.
This is a very bad act of being a guest because you have not waited for your host to come home.
You've eaten his food.
You haven't kind of asked for permission.
So Odysseus and his men already doing something quite transgressive.
The Cyclops, Polyphemus, then comes back and
to find this group of men in his cave, having consumed some of his cheeses.
And he then ends up doing something which is also not very good hosting, which is that he eats some of Odysseus's men.
So we've got kind of transgressions of Xenia on both sides.
There are real problems here.
Odysseus then has to work out how to get out of the cave.
He comes up with this very cunning idea of a stake, which he heats up in the fire and drives through the Cyclops's
eye this is yeah this is the brutal part it's really really brutal and there's a horrible simile basically comparing what he does when he he puts the stake into the eye to a drill going in and sort of you know it's just it's really really very kind of traumatic moment but the cyclops is blinded and then Odysseus essentially manages to trick his way out by hiding underneath the sheep and as the cyclops' sheep go out into pasture he and his men cling underneath and they go out through the door
