I pursued something that was focused on bottom surgery.

But like you said, there's lots of options there.

So some programs you're going to see more diversity.

You're going to see both masculinizing and feminizing procedures.

Within the feminizing procedures, some people do vaginoplasty from the robotic approach.

Other people are doing it from an open perineal surgery approach.

And there are people who will do both, but the majority of your training is going to be one or the other, probably not 50-50.

I also think it's important to look at the case mix.

So I chose a fellowship where I could get at least 50% or more of my time focused on gender affirming surgery.

But there are definitely GERS programs out there where you're going to get some exposure to these surgeries.

Maybe it's just going to be taking care of patients who had complications or doing a smaller handful of cases over the course of the year.

And so I wanted a place where I could really focus on gender affirming surgery as a major part of my training.

Absolutely.

I think you need to be able to identify and handle the complications.

You can't prepare for every complication, but you want to at least have some exposure to them in training if you're going to make this a big part of your practice.

And I think that because there is a bit more collaboration with plastic surgery on the phalloplasty cases, that can be more limiting in the training opportunities because you need to have both programs up and running well.

Yeah, I think those are all great questions.

I think it's both an exciting and fragile time to be working in gender surgery.

There's a lot more opportunities to join programs where they're

is either a full framework or at least a partial framework for this care.
