And they send Hamelcarbarca, the legendary leader, Hannibal's father, this great general, perhaps um somebody who has come into Carthaginian society.
uh more recently some people think that he is a soldier who's migrated into Carthaginian society in the fourth century BC from recent studies and he leads a group of soldiers who are called in Polybius mixhellenes.
So they're a group of um soldiers who come from North Africa who are Greek and Phoenician we think origin, Greek Libyan, Phoenician origin
Origin soldiers and Hamilcar brings this group and they start to fight a guerrilla war against the Romans.
And they occupy the heights above uh Drapanum, but also uh Palermo as well, or Panormus, and they start to fight guerrilla war against the Romans to quite a great success, actually.
And so they're he's very successful.
It's the first time, really, the land armies of the Carthaginians have done well against the Romans.
Romans.
And he builds up quite a relationship.
Um
with them, he uh with this sort of victory, but he also takes uh this the heights of Eryx, as it's called.
And again, we always forget about how important religion is in war in this part part and time in this time in the world.
And the chicken story tells us one thing, but also
Eryx is this incredibly important uh temple complex and and mountain that's above the city of Drapanum on the northwest coast of Sicily, and it was the home of a sanctuary to the goddess Aphrodite.
And that goddess was worshipped by the Carthaginians and the Phoenicians as a starte.
And this is a sacred mountain.
And Hamilcar takes the temple complex and it's this idea of again
Calling the god to your side, goddess, taking the power of the deity, that really is important too in the in the way in which these battles are remembered.
And so there's pretty fierce fighting over Erex between the Hamilcar and also the Roman forces, which hold on to part of the mountain.
And so they are battling over this sacred ground in this period.
