You have the Romans and the Syracusans, so two significant powers.
Allied in Sicily against the Carthaginians.
To me, it's a miracle that the Carthaginians were man managed to hold on to anything in Sicily for as long as they did.
We sometimes forget to think about this because they don't have a strong standing army in Sicily.
That's not the way they're operating.
They have some soldiers, they have allied soldiers, they have Carthaginian soldiers, but they don't have this kind of massive force.
And now all of a sudden we have Rome allied with Syracuse.
We have Rome then with the Syracusan army at their disposal.
And also Rome has all of Syracuse's n knowledge of how to fight Carthage at their disposal too.
Absolutely.
I mean the Carthaginians are an important wealthy place in the in the central Mediterranean.
We know they are, but we w we see them perhaps as these great equals to Rome, which which they do become.
They do rise to that occasion.
And there's no question the second Punic the First Punic War, sorry.
you know, helps create them as this force that can fight the Romans.
But they probably aren't that force when this war starts.
And I think that's super interesting too, because we always want to think about the adaptability of the Romans because the Roman sources tell us this story.
But perhaps we also need to think a little bit about that resilience and adaptability of the Carthaginians to to really understand how this could have been such
