And she looked at my face and she said, that's not going to work for us.
She didn't mean to be mean.
She meant to protect me.
My dad's doctor, though, overheard that.
He turned to her and said, you know what?
Well, she said the Miss Teenage America pageant is having a scholarship to college.
And my dad's doctor said, I'm going to fix your daughter's nose for free.
And I'm going to find this picture for you because I always get this reaction going, oh my God, seriously, that happened?
And so I woke up the next couple of days later and all of a sudden my eyes were bigger.
And I looked in the mirror and I saw a girl that I'd always dreamed of looking at.
And I said to her, we're going to enter this stupid competition.
I went through 500 girls.
The first time I ended up on TV with Bob Hope on NBC at 15 and a half years old, representing New York, talking like this.
and it was phenomenal, and it was also devastating because I got that, but there I am in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1977 with these cute little pageant girls going, y'all have the funniest accent I ever heard.
I'm like, what are you talking about?
