You know, when I came in and started my practice, I don't know that I necessarily had to like educate someone on how to talk to a urethroplasty patient.
You know, could you talk a little bit about that?
I think that might be really applicable to some of our, you know, general urology listeners who, if they do want to provide gender affirming care, probably have to have their head on a swivel a little bit to make sure that their kind of whole operation outside of the medical piece is, you know, doing the right thing for these patients.
still urinary retention so i can still think about it that way and so kind of breaking it down to symptoms for them and and making it less intimidating his i think is the way to go about doing that yeah absolutely it's not you know it's not a different system a body system you know it's it's still urinary retention it's still post-op pain you know these are things that they they take care of probably every day a lot of times maybe even without you know without us even hearing about it because it goes well
So maybe reframing it as this isn't gender affirming care, this is someone calling about post-op urinary retention.
Yeah, absolutely.
For those listening in institutions, you know, without an established gender program, you know, what would your advice for laying their own kind of groundwork be?
Either, you know, things that you're happy that you had because, you know, Ohio State had a gender program prior to you arriving or things that you've learned since that you wish they had prior to you arriving?
Yeah.
You mentioned their mentors.
Talk about mentorship, because it seems like we're talking about gender surgery and neurology expanding, but I do think it's still relatively a small community, at least of thought leaders.
How can a resident, a fellow, a young faculty member find mentors or training opportunities?
Yeah, that's I mean, that's definitely true.
You know, I don't do gender surgery in my practice, but I mean, you know, I can think of a bunch of people who if a student came to me, you know, I would have them reach out to now you as well.
But even before you started working at Ohio State, you know, I think everyone's personal network definitely includes, I think, a gender surgeon within reconstruction now.
Would you say that's the same for maybe a general urologist who wants to do more gender diverse patients in their practice, but is looking for some advice or has a problem come in?
They've got a canal stenosis or a fistula and they're like, you know, I want to know how to triage this patient, get them what they need.
Obviously, those are specialized things that the surgery should be happening probably with
someone who's doing gender affirming surgery all the time.
But triaging those patients or having a patient come in on call or even seeing someone in the office and kind of knowing what the next steps are for workup may still be something that happens in the community before they get to you.
