Okay, so with pre-diabetes, what symptoms might somebody be showing?
They're probably not going to have any.
And you won't know it until you have a blood test per se.
And that's a problem because not everybody just routinely goes and gets a blood test.
You've got to think about it, go to your doctor, book in for a checkup.
And what GPs do generally is every few years we run this thing called the AusD risk score.
And we put into an algorithm a whole lot of things like your height, your weight, your family history.
If you've got gestational diabetes when you're pregnant, we put those into a calculator that spits out a number that says, yeah, you need a blood sugar test.
The thing is that a lot of us don't go to the doctor for just a checkup.
We go when we've got a cold or we've got a sprained ankle and the GP runs out of time.
to actually do those preventative things as well.
So too few of us are getting the OSD risk check and getting a sugar level.
So by the time we find out we've got prediabetes, we might've had it for years.
Is there an age where we're more likely to have it or is it not age-related?
It used to be one of those things that you only ever got sort of in midlife, in your 50s, that kind of thing.
But we're seeing with maybe more processed foods, with more sedentary kind of lifestyle.
So you're sitting around like a couch potato and not doing as much running as you used to do.
It's starting earlier and earlier.
And so we're meant to screen women who have ever had gestational diabetes regularly for it with that oral glucose tolerance test.
Remember that test that you had when you're pregnant?
