Um and one of the reason that uh I wanted to write specifically about the prior, so this was part of of the research f for my PhD.
One of the reasons that I wanted to write about the priors was that when we think of trying to understand
how a medieval city was run.
You think obviously, particularly say a a colonial city like Dublin.
We look to the politics, you look to the crown, you look to legislation like that.
But there were a lot of very big religious institutions in Dublin.
And the heads of those institutions were very much involved in the politics of the city and in the say in a city like Dublin, involved in the politics of um the
colony and in royal affairs as well.
So to understand those politics you must understand about the priors.
And there are still many heads of these institutions which haven't been written about.
So anybody who wants to delve into St.
Thomas's, into St.
Mary's, you know, there's a huge amount of work still to be done.
So I wrote about my priors, my hospital as I like to call it.
And initially they start off pretty well.
So the first one is an interesting character in himself, um, Aylred Palmer.
Um we don't know that much about him.
Uh Kathy herself has written about and in um book which Paul has edited about the Crusaders, about this idea of Palmers and Palmer's then the the surname, if we loosely term it that way, um Palmer appearing in the Dublin Guild merchant role.
And were they palmers?
The idea of a palmer is that you've been to Jerusalem, you've taken the palm, you've gone on pilgrimage.
